THOMAS MORE
Thomas More (London, 7 February 1478 - Tower Hill, 6 July 1535) was an English Renaissance humanist, lawyer, philosopher and statesman. As an envoy of King Henry VIII of England, he stayed in Bruges in 1515 and also visited Brussels, Mechelen and Antwerp.
In 1515, Thomas More said he met the traveler who told him about Utopia island. The fictional meeting is also the start of the book of the same name Utopia. He became famous for his book Utopia (1516), in which he describes the political system of an ideal nonexistent island state. Utopia's description is similar to a socialist state of salvation. More used this book to defy England's economic and political policies. It was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1935 and is celebrated on June 22.
The Handschoenmarkt received a special tile. The city unveiled a memorial stone for the creation of Thomas More's book Utopia.
On the stone, the following sentence can be read in Dutch and in the five major world languages, Arabic, Chinese, English, Hindi and Spanish; " Here did Thomas More meet the traveler, who told him about Utopia, in 1515." This stone also symbolizes the special appeal of Antwerp as a world center for the economy and art, both during the golden age and today,
